John Duncan Fergusson was a Scottish painter and sculptor, one of the four Scottish Colourists, born in Leith. Largely self-taught, he lived in Paris from 1907 to 1914, where he joined the circle around the Fauves and painted bold, rhythmic nudes such as Rhythm, and met his partner the dancer Margaret Morris. He later lived in London and the south of France before settling in Glasgow in 1939, where he helped found the New Art Club. Margaret Morris gave his studio collection to Perth, where the Fergusson Gallery shows it, and Tate holds several of his paintings.
