John Bratby studied at Kingston and the Royal College of Art and became the leading painter of the Kitchen Sink school in the 1950s, filling big canvases with cluttered domestic scenes. He painted the pictures used in the film The Horse’s Mouth and later many portraits of famous sitters. He also wrote novels. He spent his last years in Hastings, where he died.
