John Berger was an English art critic, novelist, painter and poet who trained at the Central School and Chelsea School of Art and taught drawing before turning to writing. His BBC series and book Ways of Seeing in 1972 changed how a generation looked at art, and his novel G. won the Booker Prize the same year. He kept drawing all his life, and moved to France in the 1960s, living for decades in a peasant village in the Haute-Savoie. He wrote about painters from Rembrandt to Frida Kahlo and about rural life and migration.
