Johan Zoffany was a German-born painter who trained in Rome and came to London in about 1760, where he made his name with scenes from plays starring David Garrick and with conversation pieces, informal group portraits of families in their homes. Queen Charlotte sent him to Florence to paint The Tribuna of the Uffizi, crowded with Grand Tourists and masterpieces, now in the Royal Collection. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy, painted The Academicians of the Royal Academy, and spent several years in India painting British officials and Indian rulers. Tate Britain and the Royal Collection hold many of his works.
