Joachim Patinir came from the Meuse valley and joined the Antwerp guild in 1515, where he became the first Netherlandish painter to think of himself chiefly as a landscape painter. He invented the world landscape, a high, panoramic view of rivers, crags and distant blue hills in which small religious figures play their part. He was a friend of Albrecht Dürer and often worked with Quentin Matsys, who painted figures into his scenes. His Charon Crossing the Styx is in the Prado, and the National Gallery in London holds landscapes with Saint Jerome given to him and his workshop.
