Jean Tinguely was a Swiss sculptor, born in Fribourg and raised in Basel, who made noisy, absurd kinetic machines from scrap metal and motors. Homage to New York, built in the garden of the Museum of Modern Art in 1960, was designed to destroy itself in front of an audience. With his partner Niki de Saint Phalle he made the Stravinsky Fountain beside the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The Museum Tinguely in Basel is devoted to his work.
