Jean Dubuffet was a French painter and sculptor who, after years in the family wine trade, turned full-time to art during the Second World War. He collected and championed the art of psychiatric patients, children and the self-taught, which he called art brut, and his own thick, scratched and crude paintings drew on it. His later Hourloupe cycle of red, blue and black cellular forms became painted sculpture and architecture. His collection of art brut is in Lausanne, and Tate holds several of his paintings.
