James Tissot was a French painter from Nantes who made his name in Paris with scenes of elegant modern life. After the Paris Commune of 1871 he moved to London, where he painted society women, picnics, balls and riverside scenes with great attention to dress, and lived with his companion Kathleen Newton. The Ball on Shipboard and The Gallery of HMS Calcutta are at Tate Britain. In later life he devoted himself to hundreds of watercolours illustrating the life of Christ, now in the Brooklyn Museum.
