Sir James Guthrie was a Scottish painter associated with the Glasgow Boys. He was born in Greenock in 1859 and became best known in his lifetime for portraiture, though he is now regarded as a painter of Scottish Realism. His rural scenes of the 1880s, painted outdoors, were central to the Glasgow Boys’ new approach. He was president of the Royal Scottish Academy and was knighted in 1903. He died at Rhu in 1930.
