Jacob Epstein was an American-born British sculptor who settled in London in 1905. His carved figures for the British Medical Association building and the tomb of Oscar Wilde in Paris caused scandals, and his machine-like Rock Drill linked him with Vorticism. He made many vivid modelled bronze portraits, and late public works include St Michael’s Victory over the Devil at Coventry Cathedral. Tate holds Torso in Metal from The Rock Drill, and his Jacob and the Angel is also at Tate.
