Jackson Pollock was an American painter and a leading figure of Abstract Expressionism. From 1947 he laid his canvases on the floor and poured and dripped paint across them, making large webs of colour such as Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) and Blue Poles, an approach the critic Harold Rosenberg called action painting. He was married to the painter Lee Krasner and worked in a barn studio at Springs, Long Island. He died in a car crash aged 44, and Tate holds Summertime: Number 9A.
