Jack Pickup grew up in Waterfoot in Lancashire and studied at Manchester School of Art. In 1938 he moved to Plymouth to teach art at Devonport High School for Boys and later taught at Plymouth College of Art. He served in the fire service during the Blitz and then in the RAF. From a studio on Southside Street he painted the Barbican, its boats and fishermen, and The Box holds much of his work.
