Ivon Hitchens was a London painter who exhibited with the London Group in the 1930s. After his London home was bombed in 1940 he moved to a caravan on Lavington Common near Petworth in West Sussex, where he built a house and studio and stayed for the rest of his life. The woods and ponds around it became his great subject, painted in long, horizontal canvases of sweeping colour. He showed at the 1956 Venice Biennale and had a Tate retrospective in 1963.
