Isamu Noguchi was an American sculptor and designer, the son of a Japanese poet and an American writer, who divided his life between the United States and Japan. He carved stone and made public gardens, playgrounds and fountains, and designed sets for the choreographer Martha Graham. His Akari paper lamps and his glass-topped coffee table are classics of modern design. His studio in Queens, New York, is now the Noguchi Museum.
