Ian Hamilton Finlay was a Scottish poet, writer, artist and gardener, born in the Bahamas, and one of the leading figures of concrete poetry. In the 1950s he lived for a time on Orkney, and his early stories and poems drew on the islands. He worked with stone carvers, letterers and printers to set words in stone, wood and glass, and with his wife Sue made Little Sparta, a garden of poems and sculpture in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh. Tate and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art hold his work.
