Hugo van der Goes was a Ghent painter whose monumental altarpieces and searching portraits made him one of the most original artists of the late fifteenth century. His Portinari Altarpiece, painted for a Florentine banker and sent to Florence, had a marked influence on Italian painters. Late in life he entered the Red Cloister monastery near Brussels, where he suffered a breakdown before his death in 1482. The Trinity Altarpiece panels, lent from the Royal Collection, hang in the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh.
