Hieronymus Bosch, born Jheronimus van Aken, spent nearly all his life in the Brabant town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, from which he took his name. His crowded, fantastical panels of sin, temptation and hell, peopled with hybrid creatures, were collected by princes in his own lifetime and widely copied. Only about twenty-five paintings are now firmly given to him, chief among them the triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights in the Prado. The National Gallery in London holds his Christ Mocked (The Crowning with Thorns).
