Henry Fuseli was a Swiss painter, draughtsman and writer, trained as a clergyman, who settled in London and spent eight years studying Michelangelo in Rome. His paintings of the supernatural, dreams and violent scenes from Shakespeare, Milton and myth, above all The Nightmare of 1781, made him one of the first Romantic artists. He was Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy and its Keeper, and taught a generation of students including Constable and Etty, and he was a friend of William Blake. Tate Britain holds Lady Macbeth Seizing the Daggers and other works, and the Royal Academy also has his paintings.
