Henri Matisse was born in northern France and gave up law to study painting in Paris. He led the Fauves, whose wild, bright colour shocked the public in 1905, and became with Picasso one of the two giants of modern art. He lived for many years in Nice, painting interiors, odalisques and windows. In his last years, too ill to paint, he made large cut-outs from painted paper and designed the Chapel of the Rosary at Vence.
