Henri Fantin-Latour was a French painter and lithographer, a friend of Manet, Whistler and the young Impressionists though he did not exhibit with them. He is best known for his flower paintings, which sold especially well in England through his friends Edwin and Ruth Edwards, and the National Gallery in London holds several. His group portraits, such as Homage to Delacroix and A Studio at Les Batignolles in the Musée d’Orsay, record the artists and writers of his circle. He also made dreamy lithographs inspired by the music of Wagner, Berlioz and Schumann.
