Harold Harvey was born in Penzance and was one of the few Newlyn School painters who was Cornish by birth. He trained at the Penzance School of Art under Norman Garstin and at the Académie Julian in Paris. His bright, carefully observed paintings show Cornish fishermen, farm workers, miners and the landscape around Newlyn, where he lived and worked with his wife, the painter Gertrude Harvey. He died in Newlyn in 1941.
