Hans Eworth was an Antwerp painter who settled in London in the 1540s among other Flemish exiles. He painted portraits of the Tudor gentry and nobility, including several of Mary I, as well as allegorical pictures, and in the early 1570s worked on designs for Elizabeth I’s Office of the Revels. About forty paintings are now given to him. His allegorical portrait of Sir John Luttrell is at the Courtauld, and Tate holds his Portrait of an Unknown Lady.
