Gustave Doré was born in Strasbourg and was publishing drawings in Paris by the age of fifteen. His wood engraved illustrations for Dante, the Bible, Don Quixote and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner made him one of the most famous illustrators of the nineteenth century. His book London: A Pilgrimage, made with Blanchard Jerrold, shows the city’s crowded streets and slums. He also painted and sculpted, and died in Paris in 1883.
