Vienna Secession painter; The Kiss

Born
14 July 1862, Vienna, Austria
Died
6 February 1918, Vienna, Austria

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian painter and a founder and first president of the Vienna Secession in 1897. His work joined the flat ornament of the decorative arts with sensuous figures, and in his golden phase he used gold leaf on canvas, most famously in The Kiss and the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. He also painted landscapes around the Attersee and made a great many drawings of the female figure. His Portrait of Hermine Gallia hangs in the National Gallery, London.
