Graham Sutherland began as an etcher of pastoral scenes and turned to painting in the 1930s, when the Pembrokeshire coast shaped his strange, Romantic landscapes. He was an official war artist in the Second World War. He designed the great tapestry Christ in Glory for Coventry Cathedral and painted portraits, including a notorious one of Churchill. He lived in Kent and in later life also in the south of France.
