Giulio Romano was a Roman painter and architect, the leading pupil of Raphael, who completed his master’s work in the Vatican after his death. From 1524 he worked for Federico Gonzaga in Mantua, where he designed and decorated the Palazzo del Te, with its playful architecture and the overwhelming Room of the Giants. His departures from classical rules helped define Mannerism. He is the only Italian Renaissance artist named by Shakespeare, in The Winter’s Tale.
