Gerard ter Borch was a Dutch painter from Zwolle who travelled widely in Europe before settling in Deventer. He painted small, finely finished portraits and elegant interior scenes in which the gleam of satin and the gestures of the figures carry the story, and these influenced Vermeer and others. He was present at the peace negotiations in Munster in 1648 and painted the swearing of the treaty, a picture now in the National Gallery, London. The National Gallery and the Wallace Collection hold several of his interiors.
