Georges Braque was a French painter who, working closely with Pablo Picasso from 1908, developed Cubism. Together they broke objects into facets seen from several viewpoints, and in 1912 Braque made the first papier collé, gluing printed wallpaper into a drawing. Wounded in the First World War, he later painted large still lifes, billiard tables and a long series of studio interiors and birds. Tate holds his Clarinet and Bottle of Rum on a Mantelpiece.
