Georg Baselitz was a German painter, sculptor and printmaker, born Hans-Georg Kern in Saxony, who took his name from his home village. His early paintings caused scandal in West Berlin in 1963, and in 1969 he began painting his subjects upside down to direct attention to the paint itself. He became a leading figure of German Neo-Expressionism, also making roughly hewn wooden sculpture. Tate holds several of his works, and the Royal Academy gave him a major exhibition in 2007.
