Gabriele Münter was a German painter and a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, who studied with and became the partner of Wassily Kandinsky. In her house at Murnau in Bavaria she painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits in flat colour with strong dark outlines, drawing on Bavarian glass painting. During the Nazi years she hid many of Kandinsky’s works and those of the group in her cellar, and gave them to the Lenbachhaus in Munich in 1957. Her house is now a museum.
