Franz Marc was a German painter and a founder, with Wassily Kandinsky, of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group in Munich in 1911. He painted animals, above all horses, in strong symbolic colours, as in The Large Blue Horses and The Yellow Cow, and later moved towards abstraction in works such as Fate of the Animals. He was called up in 1914 and was killed at the Battle of Verdun in 1916. The Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See is dedicated to him.
