Frank Stella was an American painter, sculptor and printmaker whose Black Paintings, shown at the Museum of Modern Art in 1959, helped launch Minimalism. He said of his work that what you see is what you see. In the 1960s he made shaped canvases and the brightly coloured Protractor series, and from the 1970s his work grew into large painted metal reliefs and freestanding sculpture. Tate holds several of his paintings, including Six Mile Bottom.
