Fra Angelico, born Guido di Pietro, was a Dominican friar and one of the leading painters of the early Florentine Renaissance. For the convent of San Marco in Florence he painted a fresco in each friar’s cell, including a celebrated Annunciation, along with altarpieces for Fiesole and Cortona. Late in life he decorated the Niccoline Chapel in the Vatican for Pope Nicholas V, and he died in Rome. He was beatified in 1982. The National Gallery in London has his Christ Glorified in the Court of Heaven, the predella of the Fiesole altarpiece.
