Fra Filippo Lippi was a Florentine painter and Carmelite friar whose scandalous life, including his elopement with the nun Lucrezia Buti, became legend. His tender Madonnas, such as the Madonna and Child with Two Angels in the Uffizi, set a pattern for Florentine painting, and he painted fresco cycles in Prato Cathedral and Spoleto Cathedral, where he is buried. Botticelli trained with him, and his son was the painter Filippino Lippi. The National Gallery in London has his Annunciation and Seven Saints, two lunettes painted for the Medici.
