Fernand Léger was a French painter whose version of Cubism, built from tube-like forms, was nicknamed Tubism. After serving in the First World War he celebrated the machine age, painting mechanical forms, the modern city and working people in bold outlines and flat primary colour. He also made the experimental film Ballet Mécanique, designed for the stage and made mosaics and stained glass. Tate holds several of his paintings.
