Félix González-Torres was a Cuban-born American artist who lived and worked mostly in New York. Using everyday materials such as sweets, stacks of paper, light strings and clocks, he made spare works about love, loss and the AIDS crisis that visitors could often take away. Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.), a pile of sweets matching his late partner’s healthy weight, slowly shrinks as people take from it. He represented the United States at the Venice Biennale after his death, in 2007.
