Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German painter and printmaker and a founder of the Expressionist group Die Brücke in Dresden in 1905. He painted nudes in the studio and by the Moritzburg lakes, and after moving to Berlin made jagged, tense scenes of city streets and prostitutes. He was a prolific and forceful woodcut artist. After a breakdown in the First World War he settled near Davos, where he died in 1938 after the Nazis had condemned his work as degenerate. Tate holds his Bathers at Moritzburg.
