Emmy Bridgwater was an English Surrealist painter and poet, born in Edgbaston, Birmingham. In the late 1930s she joined the Birmingham Surrealists around Conroy Maddox and John Melville, and she also took part in the British Surrealist Group in London, with her first solo show at the Modern Gallery in 1942. André Breton chose her as one of six English artists for the International Surrealist Exhibition in Paris in 1947. She largely stopped painting in the 1950s to care for her family in Stratford-upon-Avon, returning to make collages in the 1970s.
