Elizabeth Thompson, known after her marriage as Lady Butler, was a British painter of military scenes who grew up partly in Italy and trained at the Female School of Art in South Kensington. Her painting The Roll Call, showing exhausted Grenadier Guards in the Crimea, was a sensation at the Royal Academy in 1874 and was bought by Queen Victoria. She painted ordinary soldiers rather than glorious generals, in works such as The Remnants of an Army at Tate Britain and Scotland Forever! at Leeds Art Gallery. In 1879 she missed election to the Royal Academy by two votes, and she spent her last years in Ireland.
