Edward Burra was a painter who lived with chronic illness all his life and worked mostly in watercolour at a table in his family home in Rye. His sharp, comic paintings of the bars and dance halls of Marseille, Paris and Harlem made his name, and he was associated with the Surrealists in the 1930s. The Spanish Civil War and the Second World War darkened his work, and later he painted brooding English landscapes. He died in Hastings in 1976.
