Edward Atkinson Hornel was a Scottish painter of landscapes, flowers and foliage, often with children. He was born in Australia in 1864 and grew up in Kirkcudbright, where he lived for most of his life. His friends in the Glasgow Boys called him Ned. His densely patterned, richly coloured canvases show the influence of his travels in Japan. He died in Kirkcudbright in 1933.
