Donato Bramante was an architect and painter from near Urbino who introduced Renaissance architecture to Milan, where he worked on Santa Maria presso San Satiro and Santa Maria delle Grazie, and painted Christ at the Column. In Rome from 1499 he built the small round Tempietto at San Pietro in Montorio, which marks the start of the High Renaissance in architecture. For Pope Julius II he designed the new Saint Peter’s Basilica, a plan later taken up by Michelangelo, and the Belvedere Courtyard of the Vatican.
