Derwent Lees was an Australian-born painter who studied in Paris and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he later taught drawing. Between 1910 and 1913 he painted with James Dickson Innes and Augustus John around Arenig Fawr in North Wales, making small, brilliantly coloured landscapes of the mountains and lakes. He also painted in the south of France with Innes. From 1918 he suffered from mental illness and spent the rest of his life in hospital. Tate holds his work.
