Derek Jarman was an English film-maker, painter, stage designer, writer and gardener. After studying at King’s College London and the Slade, he designed sets for Ken Russell’s The Devils and went on to make films including Sebastiane, Jubilee, Caravaggio and Blue, his last, made when AIDS had taken his sight. He painted throughout his life and was a passionate campaigner for gay rights. At Prospect Cottage on the shingle at Dungeness in Kent he made a celebrated garden from driftwood, flint and hardy plants.
