Denis Mitchell was born in Wealdstone, Middlesex, and moved to St Ives in 1930, where he worked as a fisherman and market gardener before turning to art. From 1949 to 1959 he was Barbara Hepworth’s chief assistant, and he went on to make his own smooth, upright abstract forms in bronze and wood. He was a founder member of the Penwith Society and lived for many years in Newlyn, where he died in 1993. His work is held by Tate St Ives and museums in Australia and New Zealand.
