David Bomberg was a British painter, born in Birmingham to a Polish-Jewish family and raised in the East End of London, who studied at the Slade. His early geometric paintings, such as The Mud Bath and In the Hold, were among the boldest British works of their time. After the First World War he turned to expressive landscapes painted in Palestine, Spain and Cornwall. He was an influential teacher at the Borough Polytechnic, where his pupils included Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff. Tate holds The Mud Bath.
