Cindy Sherman is an American photographer who has spent her career photographing herself in disguise, yet her pictures are never self-portraits. Her Untitled Film Stills of 1977 to 1980, 70 black and white images of imagined film heroines, made her a leading figure of the Pictures Generation. Later series take on history paintings, fashion, fairy tales, clowns and society portraits. Tate holds several of her works, and the National Portrait Gallery in London gave her a retrospective in 2019.
