Charles Ginner was born in Cannes to British parents and settled in London in 1910. He was a founder member of the Camden Town Group and later of the London Group, and painted dense, carefully patterned views of streets, buildings and harbours. He was an official war artist in both world wars. Plymouth Pier from the Hoe is among his best known town pictures.
