Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe was an English painter, engraver and illustrator of birds and country life, born in Langley near Macclesfield and trained at Macclesfield School of Art and the Royal College of Art. His wood engravings for Henry Williamson’s Tarka the Otter in 1932 made his name, and he went on to illustrate countless books, Ladybird nature titles and Brooke Bond tea cards. In 1947 he moved to Shorelands at Malltraeth on Anglesey, where he spent over thirty years drawing the birds of the estuary. Oriel Môn in Llangefni holds his great collection of measured bird drawings and sketchbooks.
