Chaim Soutine was a painter of the School of Paris, born to a poor Jewish family near Minsk, who arrived in Paris in 1913 and became a friend of Modigliani. His paintings of convulsive landscapes at Céret, portraits of pastry cooks and bellboys, and still lifes of carcasses of beef and plucked fowl are thick with paint and feeling. He was rescued from poverty when the American collector Albert Barnes bought many of his works in 1923. He died during the German occupation of France after an operation for a perforated ulcer.
